Album(s) of the year 2009

2009's been a good year, and we couldn't end a year without the mandatory 'album of the year' thread could we?!

I'll post a definitive list towards the end of the year, but so far these are the albums which really stand out...

Absu - Absu
Gorod - The Process of a New Decline
Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow
Megadeth - Endgame
Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans

Hospital of Death - Surge Kill Steal
Cannabis Corpse - The Weeding
Obituary - Darkest Days
Mastodon - Crack The Skye

Cant say ive paid too much attention. That Ahab album is ace Podgie. Need to listen to them more.

The first ones that come to mind for me are:

Absu - S/T
Imperial Vengeance - At The Going Down Of The Sun
The Prophecy - Into The Light
The Gates Of Slumber - Hymns Of Blood And Thunder
Vomitory - Carnage Euphoria
Xerath - I
Hearse - Single Ticket To Paradise
Gory Blister - Graveyard Of Angels

There's a lot of other albums I've really liked this year too from the likes of Suffocation, Ex Deo, Akrea (and others I've probably forgotten came out this year...) and I've also been pleasantly surprised by the ones from Paradise Lost and Megadeth, two bands that I had written off a long time ago that both released cracking albums this year.

Crack The Skye was outstanding. The Czar easily has to be the song of the year, and is even more amazing on the 2 disc vinyl as it takes up an entire side!

Endgame was good, very good infact, but on reflection it isn't as amazing as I thought. Its much the same as United Abominations in terms of quality to me (not a bad thing!), and Chris Boderick has been hugely overrated.

Though I do like United Abominations I'm not so sure I agree with you there... I think Dave and co have really stepped it up a gear with Endgame, and I think Chris Boderick has been influential in them doing so. Anyway, solid album regardless :)

I still need to check out the new Gates Of Slumber album, as well as The Weeding...

Ahab's The Divinity of Oceans is probably my favourite album of this year, with honourable mentions going to My Dying Bride and Belphegor.

Evisceration Plague certainly has its moments but I'm not sure if I'd consider it an album of the year for two reasons- Kill is better, and the production is a bit lacking to my ears. Having said that, Scalding Hail, Evidence in the Furnace, Carnivorous Swarm, Evisceration Plague and Shatter Their Bones are up there with the classics to me......so maybe it is better than Kill and therefore an album of the year? lol, I can never make my mind up on these things!

What about Behemoth's Evangelion? I'd never really liked them before but that album slays and was an instant love for me.

You heard Vomitory's Carnage Euphoria yet? I think it's better than both - and I really do rate Suffocation's new album, definitely the best thing they've done since reforming... but I still prefer Vomitory's latest.
